MgF2 und CaF2 besitzen optische Eigenschaften, die sie gegen\u00fcber Metalloxiden \u00fcberlegen machen. So ist das optische Fenster von Fluoriden wesentlich weiter (siehe Tabelle unten) als von Oxiden. Ihre Brechungsindizes sind deutlich niedriger als der des Oxids mit dem niedrigsten Brechwert (SiO2). Daher weisen Beschichtungen auf Basis dieser Fluoride hervorragende Transmissionswerte (&gt;99,5%) und sehr gute mechanische Festigkeiten auf.
